Battle Axe History

The battle axe, commonly spelled "battle ax", has been used in ancient warfare for thousands of years. The first stoned axe may have been produced around 6000 BC. These battle axes have come in many forms, shapes, and sizes. They have been created from stone, bronze, iron, steel, and from other metals.

Battle Axes were typically between one and six pounds in weight and anywhere from one to five feet in length. The advantage of axes was that they could double as tools and weapons. Axes were often much cheaper than swords and more available thus providing an explanation as to why they were often used in war.
